9 Best Dog Crates for Separation Anxiety Reviewed

In the following section, I will observe some of the reliable crates. They may prove vital for a dog to help it cope with separation anxiety.

1. New World Metal Dog Crate – Top Spacious Crate for Dogs with Separation Anxiety

New World crate provides a unique solution for people searching for a crate that will fit their large dogs. Unlike smaller crates for puppies, this one is built for dogs with an average weight between ninety-one to one hundred and ten pounds. Therefore, you will no longer get stressed about fitting your dog into a crate, when you get New World`s item for a dog with separation anxiety.

The crate has length, width, and height of 48, 30 and 33 inches accordingly. This is enough to fit a large dog without the need to bend or squeeze it in. The crate is made of wires meshed together. The wires are stronger than the ordinary mesh that would get spoilt within a few days. The crate may come with a single or double door, depending on your liking. Either way, the door swings while opening, thus entering and leaving the cage is an easy task for the pet.

The thing I like the most about this crate is that it can be disassembled when being transported. And the benefit is that you do not need any technical capabilities or special knowledge to assemble or disassemble it. With a weight of 41.9 pounds, you can transport it at the back of your car or motorcycle.

Using this cage, you can train your dog many things. Some of these include potty training and teaching the dog to bark less when you and your family are at home. It has a plastic pan where the dog can lie. However, if you have extra money, you should get a mattress that fits the dimensions of the pan, and let your pet sleep comfortably like other members of your family.

I believe this crate is among the most spacious ones you may find. It will guarantee your dog its personal space within your home. With this crate, the dog will not feel isolated, as the product is meshed all around to ensure that your pet can see whatever is happening around. I would say it will serve your dog well, therefore it is worth its price.

Positives
  • Foldable
  • It gives the pet an all-round view because of the mesh wire
  • It is equipped with a plastic pan that holds on to particles to prevent them from falling all over the house
Negatives
  • As there is no mattress, you will have to buy it separately

2. AmazonBasics Travel Carrier – Best Soft-Sided Dog Separation Anxiety Crate

If you are thinking about moving your canine friend from point A to point B, AmazonBasics has a helpful solution – a soft-sided pet travel carrier. The thing I love about this product is its simplicity. It’s hard not to believe that it is not a fancy gym bag. Besides, this novelty is highlighted by the possibility of improving your comfort while carrying it. The brand has also taken care of a dog feeling relaxed in this bag. It has been fitted with a soft blanket that has a soft canvas on the other side. The blanket provides warmth and coziness for the dog even when traveling for long distances.

The bag has also been supplied with mesh panels on all sides. Actually, I assume the designers had the idea of air travel in mind. They understood how challenging it is to travel in those cabins that do not have sufficient air supply. For that, the mesh panels provide sufficient ventilation that facilitates efficient air circulation. This way, the dog can have enough air to breathe while also feeling cool during the hot periods.

Among the greatest concerns I had with pet carriers made in the form of a bag, is their strength. Dealing with this issue, Amazonbasic has come up with small, medium and large-sized carriers of great reliability. In this respect, choose the bag that is spare enough to fit your dog inside. The large size category of these carriers can support a weight of up to 22 pounds.

Given the foregoing, I love how affordable this product is. I also like the inspiration standing behind this bag’s design. It makes the bag a good choice for all your air travel needs as it has sufficient ventilation. The spring wire design allows you to stuff it under the seats of most airplanes. However, I am still not sure about the sizes. Many customers agree that even a large size cannot fit a big dog.

Positives
  • Very affordable
  • Designed with mesh panels that help increase the ventilation
  • Inside the bag there is a soft blanket, where the dog can comfortably sleep
  • Fitted with shoulder straps that can be adjusted to a suitable size
Negatives
  • Still not quite big enough to accommodate large dogs

3. Amazon Basics Single Door & Double Door Metal Dog Crate

No products found.

The manner in which this crate is designed reaffirms the company’s effort to deliver a resilient cage. In this respect, the cage is provided with a stronger metal frame that guarantees the maximum security of your dog. Configuration with a lock and hinges ensures that a dog cannot escape. Moreover, unlike other metal cages, its advantage is increased portability.

The producer’s innovativeness is evidenced by how light this cage is. The brand realizes no one would like to walk around with a very heavy crate. Furthermore, it is flexible enough for you to fold it up within minutes and store it for later usage. Don’t you think it is a cool feature for a metallic crate?

Among other innovative attributes of this crate is its double-door design. It improves the crate’s suitability for the training of your dog in different aspects, like potty, behavioral and house training. To summarize the review of this product, it is the top flexible crate for dogs with separation anxiety. The double doors make it easier to clean and train your dog, thus proving the previous point. However, like other AmazonBasics crates, the size of this one still remains an issue that needs to be addressed. The sturdiness of this crate could also be improved.

Positives
  • Double doors that improve the crate’s flexibility
  • Just fold and store it when not in use
  • Made from coated metal for improved durability
Negatives
  • Looks not solid enough for aggressive dogs

4. Petnation Port-A-Crate Versatile Dog Crate

Pet nation is a brand that does not require much introduction. Over the years, it has proved to be reliable enough to provide pet products of high quality. Nowadays, they have surely proved to be trustworthy by producing the best crates for dogs with separation anxiety.

I must admit that I love everything about the design of this crate. By no means, it looks simple and aesthetically appealing. But here the advantages do not end — this large-size crate can carry a dog which weighs up to 70 pounds. The crate is made in various sizes, ranging from 16 to 36 inches.

For starters, you do not have to worry about the storage of this product. The crate can be folded flat for easier storage. The process of setting up is also simpler than you can imagine. It is all thanks to its design that includes a steel frame. The frame helps in maintaining the crate steady when placed on the ground. Further, its portability has been greatly enhanced. It is achieved through relatively lightweight and very comfortable straps. Also, woven mesh fabric adds to the ventilation of the crate.

When it comes to my verdict on this crate, I have to say I love it. I like the design of this innovative product and the fact that it is multipurpose. By the last, I mean it can be used both for indoor and outdoor purposes, thanks to its water-resistant materials. I also love that it can hold a dog that weighs up to 70 pounds. The only problem may occur with the issue of cleaning it.

Positives
  • A strong steel frame helps to maintain a compact shape and remain steady when placed on the ground
  • Water-resistant material means it can be used both indoors and outdoors
  • Very portable due to its lightweight and comfortable carrying straps
Negatives
  • It is quite challenging to clean the cage

5. 2PET Foldable Crate for Dogs with Anxiety

The person who designed this crate must have had the idea of camping in mind. Every time I look at it, I feel like going camping. The first reason is the thoughtful design which makes it possible to fold the crate during storage. This feature, together with the firm steel tube design, guarantees that even a person without special technical knowledge would be able to cope with it. Furthermore, the steel tube increases the toughness of the crate and allows to handle even bigger dogs.

There are other reasons why this product is considered among the best dog crate for separation anxiety. Its interior has been updated with a higher level of comfort for your dog to enjoy spending time in the crate. The story does not end here. The crate comes with mesh panel ventilation on all sides. This ensures that your dog will get the right amount of air circulation while inside the crate. The brand has also provided an improved soft nylon material, which is water-resistant, thus making the crate a suitable solution to a pet lover’s outdoor needs. Though soft, the material is resilient enough for dogs not to chew it, which could result in wear. The use of a heavy-duty zipper mechanism also helps in making chewing almost impossible.

I consider this product suitable for use. To put everything simple, it will perform the roles it is expected to perform. In this case, this role is to maintain the security of your dog both indoors and outdoors. Even more encouraging is it being simple both in appearance and use. I also love the fact that the company offers donations to animal shelters across the country. It is a huge plus for pet lovers like me. However, the brand could improve this crate’s strap.

Positives
  • Machine washable
  • One year guarantee
  • Sufficient ventilation mainly due to the mesh panel
  • Very easy to set up and fold when not in use
Negatives
  • The strap is disappointingly short, hence making it hard to carry the crate on your shoulder

6. ProSelect Empire Heavy Duty Dog Crate for Separation Anxiety

The aggressive symptoms of anxiety in dogs include scratching and tearing everything around itself. This may be a huge problem, especially for large breed dogs. However, ProSelect Empire will help you to cope with this issue by providing what can only be referred to as one of the best crates for large dogs with separation anxiety.

This cage is very firm because 20 gauge steel has been used in producing it. It has further been reinforced with tough welding at all weak points and spots. To maintain the strength of the product, the hinges have been made from high-quality materials. The objective here is to assure the dogs of all strengths will be restrained in the crate.

The metallic parts have been effectively coated, hence well-protected from external elements. This implies rusting won`t be among your top concerns. The sharp corners have been eliminated to avoid injuries of your dog. Another unique property of this high anxiety dog crate is the fact that it has a removable steel tray under it. This is very thoughtful of the company. The tray takes care of your dog’s damping needs and also helps to maintain high levels of hygiene.

In conclusion, the ProSelect Empire dog cage is on the top of anti anxiety dog crate for large breed dogs. One can not but appreciate the brand’s effort to provide high mobility. Without the set of wheels, it would be problematic to move the crate from one point to another. Despite all the best efforts, you may look for alternatives in case you are going camping.

Positives
  • Made from strong steel
  • Equipped with removable wheels and casters for increased mobility
  • Spare enough even for the large breed dogs
  • Has a higher lifespan
Negatives
  • Not highly portable

7. MidWest Folding Metal Dog Crate – Best Budget Dog Crate for Separation Anxiety

Can I keep my large dogs with separation anxiety in crates? Well, exactly for this purpose MidWest has presented its folding metal dog crate. The «life stages» tag in the title isn’t a mistake. It describes the level of flexibility that can be expected from this crate. Besides, another innovation is the inclusion of a plastic pan. The pan helps to regulate the crate’s size depending on the size of your dog.

The flexibility of this crate is also highlighted by the easiness of folding when not being in use. The pan is also an ideal device for those people who would like to add bedding materials for their dogs. It is a great investment in a better dog crating anxiety experience.

Another prominent feature of this crate is the double doors. Besides increasing cleaning convenience, they make it more efficient to train your dog. This cage is also light, which helps to minimize the efforts required to carry your dog during your next outing.

In conclusion, I love the innovativeness of this brand. Thanks to it, we, pet lovers, are able to enjoy an affordable metal folding dog crate of superb-quality. Everything in this crate—from its divider panel to the impressive satin black finish—claims about innovativeness.

Positives
  • Affordable
  • It can be used for pets of different life stages and sizes
  • Does not require much hassle when setting up
  • One-year product`s guarantee
Negatives
  • Some customers complain that the product rusts very fast

8. AmazonBasics Two-Door Pet Kennel – the Best Plastic Anxiety Dog Crate

Among numerous unique attributes of this product is that it is designed with two doors. It will be highly appreciated by people who have tried to get an aggressive pet into a cage. This feature simplifies everything. It is now easier to get a dog into the cage through the top door if it refuses to come through the side door voluntarily. The top door is fitted with a handle. This implies the pet won’t scratch you when opening the door.

This kennel is made from heavy-duty plastic. It is advantageous, as the material does not only increases the durability but also the strength of the product. The usage of plastic also makes it convenient and light, that would be a benefit when you are carrying the dog around for long. Being observant enough, you will notice that the side door is made of a steel mesh. It is an advantage in two ways. Firstly, you can relax about the pet being properly secured in the kennel. The other advantage is that due to the mesh design, the dog enjoys the privilege of increased ventilation.

As for me, I love the fact that this kennel is made from hard plastic. It helps to improve the aspects related to security and convenience when carrying it. I also love the design with two doors as it enables to put the dog into the crate easily. The only improvement that can be desired from the side of the customers is it could be more spacious.

Positives
  • Made from strong plastic, hence the kennel is light
  • Steel mesh doors for increased security and ventilation
  • Very affordable
Negatives
  • Not large and strong enough for larger pets

9. Midwest Homes for Pets Dog Crate Cover

Even though covering a dog’s crate makes a pet feel lonelier, sometimes covering becomes a necessity. A cover offers dog privacy just like other family members who have a room. Midwest understands this, that is why it has come up with a cover made of Teflon.

The cover is made of poly/cotton that is then protected using Teflon. The Teflon helps in resisting stains, including the tough oil stains. Therefore, it maintains cleanliness in the dog crate. It is also easy to clean, hence you won’t be stressed when it comes to tidying the crate and cleaning the dog’s accessories.

The cover is compatible with a single version and double crate for dogs with separation anxiety. It is also suitable for all dog crates with twenty-four inches. It is 24.25 inches long, 17.2 inches wide, and 19 inches high. The cover is held in place by hook and loop tabs. It helps the dog to minimize behaviors that arise from anxiety, for example, chewing and barking continuously.

A key feature that makes this product one of the best crates for dogs with anxiety is its five flaps that cover the sides, front, top and back of the crate. Since the flaps are made of cotton and polyester, you can simply machine wash them. Therefore, you will not be frustrated trying to clean the cover with your hands. Even if you had to do so, for example, in case your washing machine had a problem, the materials would be very easy to clean once soaked in water.

I would go for this cover at any time. I advise everyone to consider it mainly because it does not require much of a hassle when cleaning, and also because it guarantees your dog’s privacy and helps to ease anxiety.

Positives
  • Suitable for washing machines
  • Flaps cover all surfaces except the bottom
  • Made of durable materials that repel dirt
Negatives
  • The color of the cover may not match the house interior, which can bother individuals who are crazy about decorum

How to Identify a Dog with Separation Anxiety

Dog lying on the floor
Separation anxiety is mainly caused by the feeling or expectation of loneliness. It arises when the dog owner or other family members that the pet is attached to leave it alone. The dog gets anxious about being left alone and starts to exhibit various symptoms. Factors that cause separation anxiety include:

1A dog being adopted by a new owner. When a dog is adopted by a new owner, it may lead to separation anxiety. It continues until the pet gets used to living with the new owner. Dog separation anxiety may also develop when a dog that was rescued from a shelter begins a new life in a new home.
2A dog that was used to staying with people being left alone for the first time. A dog that felt completely happy when staying with people may suddenly develop distress when being alone. The anxiety develops because the pet misses people that it has been used to.
3A person who was attached to the dog leaves or dies. Sometimes a dog may have a very strong bond with the owner. When that individual suddenly passes away, it may cause dogs separation anxiety.
4The family changing the routine. Although it may not be too common, the family living with the dog may affect the behavior of the pet by changing routines. For example, choosing different time to leave for work or get back home. Since the pet is usually aware of the habitual hours, these changes may lead to worry.

The Symptoms of Separation Anxiety in a Dog

Further, I will consider some of the observable symptoms for a dog suffering from separation anxiety.

Excessive Barking

Separation anxiety in dogs may show itself through abnormal barking. If you have a camera at home, you may notice that this behavior starts and persists only when the dog is alone. During other times, when family members are around, the canine does not bark or make any disturbing sounds.

Urinating When Alone

A dog urinating in crate separation anxiety is another symptom of the disease. The dog urinates or defecates anywhere around the house because of distress and worry. The pet shows this behavior despite being trained on how to go to the toilet. The dog may do this hoping that it will not be left alone the next time everyone leaves. In this case, the pet may urinate everywhere because of the stress that develops as a result of seeing no one.

Destroying and Chewing Things in the House

In addition to a dog pooping in crate separation anxiety, the pet may also destroy anything that comes in its way. Such cases happen when you hear a person complaining about how she came home and found her dog had chewed the books. If you have tidied up the house, you may also find everything disarranged and some of the items may be destroyed beyond repair.

Escaping or Attempting to Escape

Dogs separation anxiety may also cause an attempt to escape when alone. For example, a canine that has just been adopted by a new owner may try to escape, so as to go back to the previous owner. A dog whose owner has died may escape in an attempt to see if it can find the person. The pet may also escape with the aim to avoid a lonely place.

Pacing

Pacing refers to moving around in circular motions or moving front and back around the same place. The dog circulates around the same place only when alone. When the owner is around, the canine does not demonstrate this behavior.

How to Crate Train a Dog with Separation Anxiety

Dog sleeping in the crate

If you have a dog that suffers from separation anxiety, it is advisable to train it on how to use a crate. Knowing how to deal with dog with separation anxiety may be very beneficial as it will help you to relieve the stress that the pet is facing. The process of dog separation anxiety crate training takes place in a few steps. These are discussed below.

Step 1: Select the Right Crate for the Training

The very first step of crate training dog with separation anxiety is to buy a crate that will fit your puppy’s size and breed. Small crates are good for puppies because they are not very strong. They can stay in a crate with a mesh wire because they may not be able to break the crate. However, for bigger dogs that have gained weight, you have to get a sturdier crate that will not break in one day.

Ensure that the dog does not strain to enter its crate. The best way is to determine the size of your dog and then compare it to the sizes of crates before getting one. This is not hard because most of the products, like the ones above, have the indicated dimensions. A dog cannot feel comfortable in a crate where it cannot fit.

Step 2: Make the Crate Completely Comfortable Before Training Your Dog

You cannot train your pet to enter the crate and be comfortable in it if it looks shabby. Get a mattress and fit it in the crate. This will encourage the dog to rest and feel cozy inside the gadget.

Step 3: Start Training the Dog Slowly

You should not jump into crate training dog separation anxiety. Start the process slowly so that the canine may get used to it with time. For example, you can first buy the gadget, place it somewhere in the house, and then wait and see how the dog reacts to it.

You may then start crate training dog separation anxiety by serving the dog its favorite dish inside the crate. Place the bones or the food you have bought for shedding on a plate in the crate and let it eat from there. This will let the canine get used to the crate slowly. Serving the favorite food in the gadget will show the dog that the crate is something that it can enjoy.

Step 4: Do Potty Training to Prevent the Dog from Using the Crate

If you do not train the canine on where to urinate and defecate, you may find the dog urinating in crate separation anxiety. Therefore, ensure that you conduct potty training to prevent your pet from messing the crate. Ensure that you reward the pet when it does it the right way, and punish when it is on the wrong. Dogs know when they are doing wrong, and they know how to make things right so that they do not agitate their owners. Therefore, take advantage of this.

Step 5: Leave the Dog in the Crate from Short to Long Periods

The final step of crate training older dog separation anxiety is to leave the canine in the crate for a few minutes, then for a few hours, and eventually for a day. Do everything that will encourage it to behave well while in the crate. You can even show how to play with a toy, and when the pet falls asleep, let it do it inside the gadget. The pet will get used to behaving well in the crate, and, eventually, you will not experience excessive barking and urinating everywhere.

Which Crate Should You Get?

Having consulted the reviews above, you may ask which crate you should go for. Well, the decision is very easy. First, determine the size and breed of your dog and then go for the one that will let the canine feel comfortable. All described crates are good, for example, you may get either Empire Cages or New World. Also, determine if you want a single or double door kennel for the dog.

While making the decision, you should also keep in mind the factors that cause separation anxiety and rules of how to crate train a dog with separation anxiety. The anxiety may be caused by a change of the dog’s owner, or it’s feeling lonely when everyone else leaves for work or school. It is manifested by a dog urinating anywhere, barking continuously when no one is at home, or moving in circles. You should train the canine to get used to staying in a crate when everyone is gone.

Do it step by step, so that by the end of the training, your dog may love the kennel. This will eliminate the behavior caused by anxiety. Do you have any other techniques that you use to crate train your dog? Which of the mentioned crates have you already used, and how well has it turned out for your dog?

  1. Separation anxiety is such a widespread problem. However, I’ve tried the cave training method, and there are results I’m not happy with. My dog has pissed himself several times I left him in a crate. Are there any methods to help a dog peeing in a crate with separation anxiety?

Everything depends on the time you’ve left the dog in the crate and the dog’s age. Little puppies can piss themselves if you didn’t walk them earlier or you left them for more than 5 hours. For older dogs, the reason may be that you didn’t walk them out earlier as well, or this is another separation anxiety symptom. Consult your vet or trainer to learn about this more.

Getting a good anti anxiety dog crate is an important thing. This is 50% of the curing success, so be careful when choosing a crate for your dog. It is better to consult the professional trainer or a person who had the same problem and solved it using a crate.

  3. Best crates for dogs with separation anxiety are definitely those on the list. I work in a zoo store and these options are the most purchased. So, if you need a quality crate to train your dog, take this article into account! The author did a really great job!

  4. Yes, dog crate for separation anxiety cure should be soft. So your dog wouldn’t think that you just put him in a cage and consider it as the punishment for wrong behavior. Separation anxiety is a rather widespread illness among the pets, so don’t be nervous. Just do your best to help your little friend.

  5. My dog has all of the symptoms of separation anxiety. Are there any ways to help him? Can you tell me how to crate train a dog with severe separation anxiety?

Here I’ll give you a method I’ve learned from my friend who had a similar problem with his dog.

      1. Set a timer or alarm clock so that it rings every minute. Leave the dog in the room, saying: “Stay!”. Do not close the door. Go out, step back from the door. The dog should stay in the room, and you have to be at the entrance of the room. If the dog walks towards you, immediately go and calmly press it into the room. As soon as it is there, say “Stay!” again, and take a step back, step over the threshold and stand at the entrance. So, 1 minute you are with the dog, 1 minute the threshold separates you (but not the door).

      2. Do the same exercise, but now with a closed interior door. Remember to treat your dog every time before leaving the room after the timer rings. If the dog began to scratch its paw, wait for the timer to ring, go to the dog, and then repeat the previous exercise 2-3 times.

      3. Now slightly increase the intervals. Do not set a timer, but watch the clock. Go out for 2 minutes, come back and praise the dog. You have to wait at home for 1 minute. During this minute, look at the phone, read a book, do anything, but do not deal with the dog. Go out for 10 minutes, come back, praise the dog. Wait again for 1 minute. Go out for 3 minutes, come back, praise. Go out for 20 minutes, come back praise.

  6. Crate for dogs with anxiety is the most effective curing method. But it is better to hire a professional handler so you will be 100% sure that your pup gets rid of their problem. However, choosing a crate is only up to you. From my own experience, I recommend soft crates.

  7. The dog crate doesn’t have to be a real crate at all. I’m using Petnation Port-A-Crate. It is soft and looks like a simple dog booth. It is also easy to clean and maintain since you can just brush all of the dirt. This product is one of the best dog crates for separation anxiety.

  8. Great article, Matthew! I recently noticed that my dog does weird things when I’m not at home. He steals my clothing, barks a lot. I took Noon to the vet, and he said that my poor boy has separation anxiety. So, my question is how to crate train an older dog with separation anxiety? This is important for me because this kind of behavior isn’t likely for adult dogs.

Hi! Naturally, there is no way that will solve all problems at the click of a finger. Correction of separation anxiety usually takes about two months, sometimes more.

Crate training method has long been a well-known practice approved by many behaviorists. The cage is your dog’s friend, it’s a solution that will help you deal with many problems. This is not cruel and does not harm the animal’s health if you accustom the dog to the cage normally, and you don’t just forcibly lock him there. Just think how dogs and wolves have lived in caves for hundreds of years. Yes, they are not literally normal animals, because they run a lot and spend their lives in motion. But in nature, they use these caves as a home: dark, warm and cramped spaces to sleep, to raise puppies, to feel safe. This is an instinct that is driven into the head of your dog at the deepest level. Many dogs feel much calmer and safer in a crate or cage, especially if they are left alone.

  9. My dog suffers from separation anxiety, but I can’t just put the dog in the dog crate for separation anxiety cure. This sounds like a medieval method of training. If someone here practiced this kind of training, please share your experiences!

  10. Does crating a dog help with anxiety? As a dog lover, I think this is a rather cruel way to train your fluffy friend. Can somebody tell me about their real experiences?

For some reason, we forget that an apartment for a dog is the same crate, but a little bigger. The dog in the apartment also experiences sensory, informational, motor, game deficiency and, probably, a bunch of some needs, like in a cage. The apartment for the dog should be as a shelter (like a crate). The dog comes to rest there. But this happens only when the dog walks till they’re tired. And, since we walk the dogs mostly to let them satisfy their natural needs, we turn the apartment into a stadium or a square. This means that the crate for a well-maintained dog is no worse than your apartment. A crate is a shelter in a shelter for your pet.
